Happy New Year from Empire Soul!

Friday 29th January 2016

Happy New Year from your favourite Soul and Motown Band in Hampshire!

With the busy Christmas period out of the way - and the diary already filling up for the Spring/Summer - January is traditionally a time where most bands take little time out from gigging to spruce up their repertoire and Empire Soul is no exception. We've been taking a look at one of the most important parts of your wedding day - the First Dance...

At Empire Soul, we love Soul music, so we thought it would be fun to put together our top 5 classic 'first dance' songs that we have enjoyed playing.

The first dance is such a special moment in your wedding day and we hope you enjoy these as inspiration.

1. Etta James - At Last
An absolute classic, from the atmospheric intro, to the arresting first line. A great ballad to slow dance to. Here is a rendition covered by the legendary Beyonce.

2. Stevie Wonder - For Once in My Life
Originally a ballad, Stevie Wonder added his magic touch to this cover, making it his own in 1968. Incredibly, Motown Record boss Berry Gordy didn't like it and refused to release it. Eventually, he was persuaded by the Motown Quality Control department. It was an instant hit, with lyrics that couples everywhere related to.

3. Al Green - Let's Stay Together
This classic spent 9 weeks atop the Billboard chart. With it's lyrics about unconditional love and being determined to stick it out - "Loving you whether, times are good or bad, happy or sad", it's a favourite with couples everywhere and a wedding classic.

4. John Legend - All Of Me
A modern soul classic, John Legend wrote this for his fiancee. A simple, modest proposal, set against a piano backdrop, it resonates with lovers everywhere.

5. Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody
An 80s soul classic and dance floor filler, it's surprisingly tender lyrics make for a great wedding song. "I make my wish upon a star, and hope this night will last forever."

Enjoy!!
